Train 1000 Midwives

Following a bitter civil war with Somalia, the newly-independent Republic of Somaliland was left with, basically, no health care professionals. One goal of the Edna Hospital is to train 1000 midwives and return them to their communities where they can help to reduce the extremely high rate of maternal and infant mortality.

Info about Somaliland
Somaliland's health care system was utterly destroyed by the civil war with Somalia leaving the country with, among other problems, the highest rate of maternal and infant mortality in the world. It is a goal of the Hospital to train and dispatch 1000 midwives throughout the country.
Project Milestones
Edna Adan founded and built this hospital with a number of goals in mind, such as to improve the overall health care system of her homeland and to contribute toward ending the deeply traditional practice of Female Genital Mutilation. But, perhaps her most readily achievable goal is to train more midwives. Women in Somaliland have a shocking 1 in 10 chance of dying in childbirth. Edna aims to train 1000 young midwives, sending them back home where they will save lives for many years to come.
Background
Edna Adan was the First Lady of Somalia until her democratically-elected husband was overthrown in a coup in the late 60's. She went on to have a career in the World Health Organization. Upon retirement, she invested all of her savings toward building a hospital in her newly-independent homeland, Somaliland, which had been ravaged by civil war with Somalia. The hospital has earned high praise from, among others, NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, who profiles Edna and her work in his book Half The Sky.
